A True Story About One Tooth, Two Countries, and a Major Difference

This is a true story about me.

And the reason why I do what I do today.

The story takes place in the United States.
At one point, one of my teeth cracked. I visited a dentist, underwent imaging, and was informed that the tooth needed to be extracted.

As I am accustomed to seeking a second opinion, I consulted another dentist.
After additional imaging and evaluation, I was told that the tooth could be treated, but that the process would be lengthy. I was warned of serious consequences if the treatment was not completed and informed that a dental crown would be required afterward to restore proper function.

I did not have dental insurance — and even if I had, the dentists themselves emphasized that dental coverage in the U.S. is generally quite limited in practice.
The courteous receptionist then presented the cost:

👉 $8,000 USD — for a single tooth.

I was shocked. This amount was beyond my financial means, and even the proposed payment plan was not an option.

 I returned home overwhelmed.
After careful consideration, I made the decision to purchase a plane ticket and travel to Serbia, to my hometown of Kragujevac.

There, I was treated by my long-time dentist — a highly skilled professional whom I trust completely. In addition to receiving treatment, I was able to spend valuable time with my family and friends.

Plane ticket(round trip) cost: $1,000 USD

In Serbia, the following was completed:

  • full diagnostic imaging

  • a treatment process lasting nearly one month

  • root canal therapy

  • no crown or implant was required

  • final restoration with a filling — the tooth fully functional and preserved

Total dental treatment cost: $150 USD

Accommodation costs were not incurred, as I stayed at my family home.

👉 $8,000 USD in the United States
👉 $1,150 USD total in Serbia

 The difference speaks for itself.

I share this story to encourage international patients to consider receiving medical care abroad — to invest in their health, gain a new experience, and significantly reduce costs.

Serbia is home to outstanding dental professionals who provide comprehensive care and ongoing support throughout the entire process. Most dental procedures require 10 to 15 days, a timeframe within which treatment can be successfully completed.
